The Neilson papers include correspondence, minutes and memoranda documenting his relationship with Rutgers University, both as an alumnus and a member of the Board of Trustees; the papers also contain miscellaneous documents including wills and Neilson's literary contributions to the Rutgers Alumni Monthly. The Board of Trustees series is divided by committee: Finance, Honorary Degrees and New Jersey College for Women; there is also a folder on general Trustees matters. The second series consists of records pertaining to the Rutgers Alumni Association, Class of 1903, The Rutgers Luncheon Club and also includes general correspondence.

Lawyer and active philanthropist, Robert Hude Neilson was born in New Brunswick, N.J. on June 11, 1882. He attended Rutgers Preparatory School and Rutgers University, graduating with an A.B. Degree in 1903. Neilson received his LL.B. Degree from the Harvard Law School in 1906. His legal career began with the New York firm of Cravath, Henderson and de Gerdorff, where he became a partner in 1913.
